Body Interfaces concept and method

"The body as interface" is an artistic concept and research that comes out of a long research in body-based performance practices, site specific art and technology. The project has a very expansive interpretation and definition of the terminology of "interface" and aims to take the combination of body - interface to a wider understanding, as a relational space between two entities, concerning the aspects of bringing together two parts, as well as separating them, being a threshold condition for the two.

The research combines working with the body and (as) materiality in the tradition of site specific performance art combined with a newer understanding of the body that we have derived through our use of technology and its terminology. The project will benefit from the methodology of technology and not use technology as such; it will research in the physical sensations and meeting points that the body has with the surroundings, inspired by tools required from studying the body in technology with the concept of the interface as a main focus point. The interventions deals with the body as interface for experience, communication in relation to other materialities and the environment that surrounds and interact with these. The interface is here read as a transmitting entity and agency between the body and the surrounding surfaces; translating signals through interaction in and with the environment.

Body Interfaces // Body as Interface is a site-specific performative installation, a spatial activation of Tina Mariane Krogh Madsen's extensive research in Body Interfaces, which is using a terminology coming from technology in a site-specific performance and intervention-based practice. This embodies the concept of 'interface' through analog interactions with the environment, creating a feedback loop between the body and site. The body as interface is here read as a transmitting entity, which deals with the relationship between the body, surrounding surfaces and the environment.

The installation in the exhibition space Spanien 19C takes the form of a laboratory that develops through its duration; it is a performative project that regards the presentation format as a performance in itself. It is additionally a reflection on the use of archive and documentation in performance art, used as a catalyst for generating new works and processes as well as it reflects on the use of notation and instruction as a form of live coding and activation concept.

During the duration of the installation the artist will be present and activate the lab, where new Body Interfaces research will be generated during the opening hours of the exhibition space. The presentation and installation in Spanien19C is part of an ongoing investigation of formats, where it is showing materials from previous performances and interventions as well as it develops these processes further in dialogue with the unique space of Spanien 19C. During the installation there will be a number of events related to the project's research field: Body Interfaces performances, concerts and invited guests in a dialogue and discussion about interfaces in theory and practice.

Interventions in the cityscape of Aarhus is a crucial a part of the data-gathering process of the project. These interventions will take place at 12.00 noon on selected days, where locations and dates will be published here on this site.

From 13.00 and onwards, in the opening hours of the exhibition space, the artist will return to the Body Interface lab with the collected data from the interventions, which will be reworked in the installation context.

The first interventions and performances under the title Body Interfaces were developed during an artist residency in Iceland at the Fljótstunga Travelfarm in the spring of 2015 and later adapted to the urban context of the 'open source' festival Electropixel in Nantes, France (2015). During another two-month stay in Iceland in the frame of the Skálar Artist Residency in Seydisfjordur (2015), sound was further included in the research in collaboration with media and sound artist Malte Steiner. In addition, Madsen presented and performed her research in the Wolfart Projectspace in Rotterdam, the Netherlands (2016), and as a part of Atelierhaus im Anscharpark's Crossover project in Kiel, Germany (2016). The first performative Body Interfaces installation took place in the performance space Grüntaler9 in Berlin, Germany (2016), in an intense eight-day 'performative scripting', where invited performers reactivated material from previous Body Interfaces performances and interventions as well as Madsen daily performed in the space. Body Interfaces was also presented at the Interface Politics 1st International Conference in Barcelona, Spain (2016) organized by BAU School of Design and Hangar.org.

Tina Mariane Krogh Madsen is a Danish Artist, Art Historian and Curator.
